Silent Alarms specialises in HD, IP and Smart CCTV systems for home and business. The systems we supply and install consist mostly of HikVision and ProVision. As CCTV is an expanding industry with technological advancements and many new and smart products being launched, we grow with the industry.
We have come a long way since the days of Analogue cameras which have now been phased out and replaced with HD. Upgrading from Analogue is a simple process as both HD and Analogue systems use coaxial cabling so it’s just a matter of swapping out the equipment.
IP Systems are fully digital and completely different to HD. IP cameras have their own configurable IP addresses which can be directly connected to the internet without an NVR (Network Video Recorder) and accessed using a personalised Username and Password. The resolution completely outshines that of HD and allows for digital zooming.
Smart cameras are gaining a lot of interest, particularly in the residential market. Smart cameras generally have their own mobile apps that notify you when motion is detected and include two-way communication. Some cameras have built-in sirens, spotlights and strobe lights that are triggered by motion and record to cloud, SD card or to WiFi NVR’s.
Difference between HD and IP CCTV Systems
The major difference is that IP systems have the advantage over HD in terms of cabling, resolution and coverage area.
HD CCTV Systems
HD CCTV systems provide great resolution these days and are mostly perfect for general use for homes and offices. However, in areas that have a lot of motion or need to be seen in high detail, the HD frame rate is lower than that of IP and not ideal for this purpose. Digital zooming with HD is limited and cannot be done in the same way as IP cameras due to pixilation of the video image.
In terms of cabling, each Analogue / HD camera must be wired directly from the camera to the DVR which often causes cable clutter with a larger number of cameras.
Generally, a coaxial cable is used for video transmission between the camera and DVR and Rip Cord or similar for 12v / 24v power. However, CAT5 or CAT6 cable can be used in conjunction with Baluns providing both power and video through one cable.
An IP CCTV Systems
An IP CCTV System is completely digital and provides the best resolution as well as the flexibility of installations.
IP cameras have an IP address that can be connected directly to the internet for live view/cloud recording or locally to an NVR (Network Video Recorder).
IP Cameras are powered via PoE (Power over Ethernet) switches using one CAT5 or CAT6 cable for both power and video transmission between camera and PoE switch or NVR with PoE ports.
Cabling and cable clutter are reduced. PoE Switches can be positioned in various locations with one return cable to the NVR. For example, a 4 port PoE switch can be installed at the gate area with up to 4 connected cameras and one return cable to the NVR. Alternatively, a wireless link can be set up between the PoE switch and NVR where cabling is not practical.
